Timaru Transportation Study
Transit New Zealand and the Timaru District Council have recently completed the Timaru Transportation Study that looked at the transportation needs of the Timaru urban area over the next 25 years.
The study has developed recommendations that encourage greater use of rail for freight and further development of the public transport, walking and cycling network, as well as keeping state highways as vital piece of transport infrastructure for Timaru.
A key recommendation is that SH1 remains on Evans Street but that sections will need to be widened to four lanes, removing the dangerous areas where traffic merges from two lanes to one. The recommendations also include a mix of local roading infrastructure, traffic management and travel demand management.
Transit New Zealand (Transit) and the Timaru District Council will be working closely with Evans Street businesses and residents to address concerns outlined in the Timaru Transportation Study's Consultation Summary Report, which was released 1 July and can be viewed above.
The full appendices for the Consultation Feedback Report can be obtained from the Timaru District Council, or you can email timaru@transit.govt.nz
