What is it?
The IAP Project is a key priority of the Transport Sector Strategic Directions document (TSSD). The TSSD document provides an important contribution to the government's objectives for a sustainable New Zealand transport system, consistent with the New Zealand Transport Strategy.
What is the Purpose?
The purpose of the IAP Project is to:
"Identify gaps and barriers to achieving better integration, both within and between transport and land-use planning (through case studies and other means)" TSSD.
Who are the Players?
The project is a collaborative endeavour between transport sector agencies and Ministry for Environment, and led by Transit New Zealand. The IAP Project is one of several strategic work streams sponsored by the Transport Sector Chief Executives' Group, and managed by the Planning Task Force (see TSSD Projects and Reporting Structure).

IAP Project Plan
The IAP Project started in April 2006 and is to be completed by March 2008 (see IAP Project Plan) . The project is divided into three distinct phases, as follows:
- Phase One: Planning and data collection
- Phase Two: Issues analysis - case studies
- Phase Three: Reporting and recommendations
"Live" Case Studies

Its most significant aspect is the use of 'live' case studies that are examples of actual transport and land use planning issues being experienced in a region. Project case studies have been selected for several reasons such as the complex range of problems faced, the degree of severity and resulting impact on the regional economy or the need to future proof in the face of forecast rapid growth.

What do we hope to Achieve?
The benefits of the project are many.
In addition to the valuable learning that will take place, we would expect to streamline planning between government, business and the community, resulting in more rapid and smoother resolution of transport and land use planning issues. Overall, the associated cost savings should be significant as well as the associated social and environmental benefits resulting from more effective transport and land use integration.

IAP Workshop 8 November 2007
We had a very successful workshop, which was well received by the 59 participants and speakers.
The purpose of the workshop was to focus on the lessons learned from the development of spatial strategies to address growth management, urban development, and economic development in a variety of New Zealand and Australian settings. We were able to compare and contrast these experiences with the findings and recommendations in the IAP Phase One report, and the five case studies developed by the project.
The discussions at the workshop will be used to inform the planning and implementation of solutions for New Zealand, through the identification of priority actions.
The workshop presentations can be downloaded in pdf format below.
