Christchurch Bus Priority Measures Consultation
Why do we need Bus Priority Measures in Christchurch?
Transit New Zealand has completed consultation on bus priority measures for Christchurch. To find out more, see documents above.
To encourage more people to use public transport, Transit New Zealand is working with Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury to introduce bus priority measures that will assist buses to move around the city quickly and easily.
By 2021 Christchurch's population is predicted to increase to 440,000 people. As Greater Christchurch has the highest rate of car ownership in New Zealand it is important to encourage more use of public transport. This will ensure that the increase in population does not adversely impact on the city’s existing transport infrastructure.
Christchurch's traffic is also increasing and if it continues to grow as it has done, in ten years’ time there will be 12,500 vehicles a day sitting in congested traffic. That has serious implications not just for transportation, but also for the environment.
The bus priority measures proposed give buses on certain routes a dedicated lane for use during the busy peak morning and evening travel periods. This will reduce bus travel times and make them more consistent. This reliability is expected to encourage more people to start and use more of Christchurch’s bus services.
