Improving Heavy Vehicle Efficiency

A research study to investigate the feasibility of allowing higher mass and dimension limits to operate on all or parts of New Zealand's public roads.

A research study completed in 2001 to investigate the feasibility of allowing higher mass and dimension limits to operate on all or parts of New Zealand's public roads.

Work has been going on for some time investigating the possibility of allowing more efficient vehicles to operate on New Zealand's roads. Transit New Zealand has sponsored these studies and investigations since 1992.

Transit's involvement in this project is driven by a number of factors. Transit is charged with the responsibility of operating a safe and efficient state highway system. As such, Transit must ensure that the mass limits of heavy vehicles are safe for the state highways. The state highway network is the strategic link in the nation's economy and any improvements, such as more efficient heavy vehicles that lead to increased productivity of the transport and industry sectors, must be supported by Transit.

Printed copies of the documents published in 2001 are available on request by emailing Lynn Sleath. There are also a limited number of CDs with the complete set.
