Solid start to Northern Motorway resurfacing - Transit thanks all motorists

Transit thanks motorists for their patience and co-operation as a solid start has been made to resurface 9.3km of the Northern Motorway (SH1) between Oteha Valley Road and Silverdale.

Transit Northern Operations Manager Joseph Flanagan says, "Contractor s have been working 24/7 to prepare the road for the final surface. This is now complete and the final layer of seal will be laid in the coming days.

"So far the work is going well and motorists can keep listening to the radio for traffic updates during peak periods and watching out for on-road signage to help them avoid delays. We are working to fine tune traffic management measures to keep traffic moving during peak periods," he says.

At this stage, work is on track to complete the laying of the final road surface in time for all lanes to temporarily reopen between 12 midday and 9pm this Sunday for motorists travelling to and from Auckland after ANZAC weekend.

Traffic on Monday was heavy and some delays were experienced as one lane closed for work to begin. Traffic flows eased and the motorway was free flowing today as more people took advantage of the two alternative routes State Highway 17 and East Coast Road .

An operations centre is running from the Auckland traffic management centre at Northcote giving live traffic updates from key points over the motorway and on the alternative routes throughout peak periods.

Work on the northbound lanes will start overnight on Sunday on a single 950m stretch north of Oteha Valley Road before the BP Service Centre.

When this is completed, another 4.2km stretch will be stripped and resurfaced and this work is scheduled to be completed by 12noon Monday 5 May.
