Transit to upgrade SH26 bypass intersection in Morrinsville

 The intersection of Thames Street and the Marshall Street bypass on State Highway 26 in Morrinsville is about to be upgraded to make it safer and easier for local traffic to access Morrinsville.

 The recent acquirement of additional land will allow Transit to further improve the flow of traffic into Morrinsville town centre and onto the SH26 bypass by widening the corner at the intersection of Thames Street and Marshall Street . 

The central island of the intersection will also be remodelled to physically separate state highway traffic from local traffic wanting to continue travelling on Thames Street into the town.  

Matamata-Piako District Council infrastructure manager George Ridley says, "Clear separation of the traffic lanes will certainly improve the safety of this intersection and is supported by Council."

 Transit acting regional operations manager Alan Burkett says the $90,000 intersection upgrade will stop traffic changing lanes at the last moment to head into town, and will make the intersection safer and clearer for everyone.  

"The work is expected to commence within the next few weeks and, weather permitting, will take around six weeks to complete," says Mr Burkett.
