SH6 Kawarau Falls Bridge to Close for Repairs
The Kawarau Falls Bridge on State Highway 6 between Frankton and Kelvin Heights will be closed for repairs between 13 April and 24 April 2008.
The closures, from Sunday night to Friday morning, will be between 11 pm to 6 am. No work will be carried out on Friday and Saturday nights.
There will be openings for traffic for 10 minutes every hour on the hour during the closures. Access will be provided for emergency services at all times and the footbridge will be available to foot traffic.
The repairs are part of an ongoing programme of structural maintenance on the 82-year-old bridge, says Transit New Zealand’s area engineer for Central Otago, John Jarvis.
“We are lifting the running planks to gain access to the decking and Kingston end abutment cap underneath, which needs repairing.”
Closure is unavoidable because the bridge is single lane, Mr Jarvis says.
Transit New Zealand apologises for any inconvenience caused to motorists.
