More busway to open
An additional 250 metres of bus lane opens tomorrow as work continues on Stage 2 of the Northern Busway .
Buses will now merge with motorway traffic further south of Esmonde Road interchange, just after the Exmouth Street footbridge. The new section is part of work to extend bus lanes from Esmonde Road Interchange to the Auckland Harbour Bridge and improve safety and motorway access at the Onewa Road Interchange.
Another 890 metres of bus lane up to the Auckland Harbour Bridge will open on completion of Stage 2 in mid 2009.
At Onewa, the previous two-way bridge over the motorway that involves tight, high speed turns will be demolished and be replaced by two one-way bridges. One will provide a general traffic lane for the southbound off-ramp; the other a traffic lane and a bus lane for the southbound on-ramp. These gradually curving bridges will improve safety for motorists.
The upgrade is being completed next to live traffic, with overnight and off-peak closures to motorway lanes and ramps to minimise disruption to SH1.
