Safety improvement project on SH1 in Oamaru a step closer

The Thames St Safety Improvement project on State Highway 1 in Oamaru is a step closer now that a contract to relocate the Boer War Memorial has been funded and awarded by Transit New Zealand.

Transit regional projects manager Simon Underwood says the project aims to improve the safety of Thames St, particularly at the busier intersections of Severn St, Eden St, Ribble St, Usk St and Ouse St, through the introduction of a co-ordinated traffic signal system.

“This will improve the safety and use of the intersections for both motorists and pedestrians, where the crash rate has been approximately five times greater than expected of a similar section of urban state highway.  Cycling will also be safer, as cycle lanes will be continuous along the highway section of Thames St.”

At the Severn St intersection, construction of the safer layout first requires relocation of the Boer War Memorial 40 metres south in to the lower section of Thames Street. Planning for this involved consultation with the Waitaki District Council, the Returned Servicemen Association, and Historic Places Trust.

“Not only is it essential that that memorial retains its prominent location centrally within Thames St, but also the method by which it will meticulously be dismantled and re-assembled is to be such its integrity and character is maintained,” Simon Underwood says.

Just when the relocation work will commence will be worked through with the successful contractor, but it is most likely to be after Anzac Day.

“We are delighted with the project being a step closer now. This is a great example of partnership between Transit, Waitaki District Council and the community, and we look forward to working together with Transit as we progress the project,” Waitaki District Council Mayor Alex Familton says.

The detailed design on the remainder of the project is continuing, with tenders expected to be called in May. The project as a whole is planned to be completed by end of the year. Further details and plans of the project are available on Transit website at www.transit.govt.nz/projects.
