Further update on Transit safety work on SH6 near
Roaring Meg
Transit
New Zealand
advises that the widening work to a section of SH6 in the Kawarau Gorge near
the Roaring Meg has been successfully completed, with the road in that section
now being up to two metres wider.
Transit Area Engineer for Central Otago John Jarvis says that because this part
of the project has been so successful, Transit will now widen another narrow
section of the gorge 3km further east towards Cromwell.
"We have come across very good rock conditions so we managed to safely
remove more rock than expected and we now hope to have similar conditions
further up the gorge."
The additional work in the gorge is expected to be completed by the end of next
week Friday 14 March.
Because of the constricted nature of the worksite and also for safety
considerations, traffic will be allowed only on single lane and delays of up to
10 minutes can be expected between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm daily, Monday to
Friday.
Travellers and transport operators will need to take into account the effect the
traffic delays could have on their timetables and plan accordingly, especially
people travelling to Queenstown airport to catch flights.
